Hydraulic Oil Press Cylinder Working Principle

The hydraulic cylinder is the main actuator in a hydraulic oil press. It converts oil pressure from the pump station into linear pressing force. For machine comparison, cylinder bore, working pressure, stroke, guidance, seals and the complete press structure must be reviewed together.

Main Cylinder Components

  • Cylinder barrel: contains the pressurized hydraulic oil and guides the piston.
  • Piston: separates the pressure chambers and converts fluid pressure into force.
  • Piston rod or moving platen connection: transfers force to the pressing assembly.
  • End covers and seals: retain pressure and control external or internal leakage.
  • Oil ports: admit and return oil as the directional valve changes the movement.
  • Guide rings and wear surfaces: keep the piston aligned during repeated cycles.

How the Pressing Cycle Works

  1. The hydraulic pump sends oil through the control valve into the working chamber.
  2. Oil pressure acts on the piston area and creates linear force.
  3. The piston or connected platen moves toward the pressing basket.
  4. During pressure holding, the hydraulic circuit maintains the required process stage while oil drains from the material.
  5. The valve changes direction, oil returns to the tank and the cylinder retracts for unloading and the next batch.

Force, Area and Pressure

The theoretical cylinder force is:

[ F = P \times A ]

For a circular piston:

[ A = \frac{\pi D^2}{4} ]

  • (F): theoretical output force
  • (P): hydraulic pressure
  • (A): effective piston area
  • (D): cylinder bore diameter

When pressure is stated in MPa and area in mm², remember that 1 MPa equals 1 N/mm². The calculated value is not automatically the usable force at the material. Seal friction, hydraulic losses, structural deflection, pressure-control settings and the pressing-basket geometry must also be considered.

Cylinder speed is related to oil flow:

[ v = \frac{Q}{A} ]

  • (v): piston speed
  • (Q): oil flow entering the chamber

This is why a larger cylinder can increase theoretical force at the same pressure but may move more slowly if pump flow is unchanged.

What Buyers Should Confirm

Before comparing cylinder price or requesting a replacement, ask the manufacturer for:

  • cylinder bore, rod diameter and effective pressure area;
  • working pressure, maximum permitted pressure and relief-valve setting;
  • usable stroke and installed dimensions;
  • seal arrangement and replacement-seal specification;
  • cylinder-barrel material and surface-finishing process;
  • guidance method, mounting points and load direction;
  • pressure-test basis and final machine drawing;
  • compatibility with the pump station, frame and pressing basket.

Do not compare machines only by a single MPa or tonnage number. A useful quotation should connect the cylinder data to the selected machine model, raw material, batch load and required production cycle.
