Cashew Kernel and Cashew Shell Liquid Lines

Cashew kernels and cashew nut shells are two different industrial feedstocks. Edible kernels may be evaluated for a food or cosmetic oil line. Shell material contains cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) and requires a separate industrial safety, material-compatibility, collection, and cleaning study.

Raw Material Boundary

Kernel line: use safely shelled kernels or broken kernels with residual shell and CNSL contamination controlled.

Shell line: use a representative shell sample with its safety data, moisture, particle form, and intended industrial liquid specification. Shells must not enter a food-oil line, and shared equipment requires a documented contamination assessment.

Cashew Kernels

  1. Sort out shell fragments, scorched kernels, mold, and rancid material.
  2. Verify moisture and storage condition.
  3. Crush evenly shortly before pressing.
  4. Keep food, cosmetic, and industrial lots segregated.

Cashew Shells

  1. Define receiving, storage, size reduction, heating, vapor control, and closed liquid collection.
  2. Confirm seals, hoses, tanks, and contact surfaces against the actual CNSL specification.
  3. Define worker protection, spill control, residue handling, and cleaning before equipment selection.

Pressing or Dedicated Route

For kernels, start with a low-temperature hydraulic batch trial and evaluate filtered oil, cake release, and cleanability. For shells, do not copy the kernel route or assume a standard edible-oil press is suitable; select a dedicated industrial extraction route only after material and compatibility trials.

Filtration and Finished-Oil Target for Kernels and CNSL

Kernel oil specifications should state settling or filtration grade, visible sediment, color, odor, intended use, and required tests. CNSL specifications must instead define industrial solids removal, water, collection temperature, tank and seal compatibility, and downstream use. The two products require separate sampling and acceptance criteria.

Data Required for a Quotation

  • Exact feed: whole cashew, shell, raw kernel, or broken kernel; moisture, contamination, storage condition, and representative sample
  • Kernel food/cosmetic use or CNSL industrial use, plus available safety and product specifications
  • Input per batch or day, operating hours, and shelling or size-reduction scope
  • Heating, ventilation, closed collection, filtration, tank, residue, cleaning, and worker-protection scope
  • Power, heat, floor space, destination, and delivery terms

Acceptance Records

For kernels, record residual shell, moisture, crush size, charge, cycle time, oil temperature, crude and filtered oil, cake, and cleaning. For shells, record the approved material, conditioning settings, closed collection, liquid and residue mass, leak or spill checks, filtration result, contact-material condition, and residue-handling procedure. Acceptance of one route does not qualify the other.
